Downstreaming, explained
Downstreaming applies chemical after the pump rather than through it. A downstream injector sits in the line past the pump and draws solution from a tank whenever pressure at the nozzle drops low enough. That is the whole trick, and it is why the soap tip matters so much.
Why your injector is not pulling
This is the most common call we get, and the answer is nearly always the same:
- Wrong nozzle. An injector needs low pressure at the nozzle to create draw. With a standard cleaning tip fitted it will not pull at all. Fit the soap or black tip.
- Blocked pickup filter. Check the filter on the chemical line.
- Wrong or worn injector orifice. Injectors are sized to flow. An 8 to 10 GPM injector on a 4 GPM machine will draw poorly, and vice versa.
- Too much hose after the injector. Long runs past the injector reduce draw.
Downstream or a soft wash system?
Downstreaming is simpler, cheaper and handles a lot of residential work. A dedicated soft wash system gives you control over the mix ratio, much better reach on tall work, and lets you apply chemical without running the pressure washer at all. Plenty of rigs carry both.
What we stock
Injectors, bypass assemblies, rinse valves and the brackets to mount them - including the rinse valves we had made for us so downstream systems can actually be flushed out. A remote-controlled system like the FlowPro lets you switch chemical on and off at the gun instead of walking back to the machine.

Common questions
Why is my downstream injector not pulling chemical?
Almost always the nozzle. A downstream injector needs low pressure at the nozzle to create draw, so it will not pull with a standard cleaning tip fitted. Fit the soap tip first, then check the pickup filter and whether the injector orifice matches your machine's flow.
How far can I downstream?
Reach depends on your machine's flow, the nozzle and how much hose sits after the injector. Most contractors comfortably reach a two-storey wall downstreaming from an 8 GPM machine. Beyond that, a dedicated soft wash system will out-reach it.
What dilution do I get when downstreaming?
The injector dilutes your tank mix as it draws, so the strength at the surface is well below the strength in the tank. That is why people mix stronger in the tank for downstreaming than they would for a soft wash system that meters the ratio directly.
Can I run chemical through my pressure washer pump?
No. That is exactly what downstreaming exists to avoid. Sodium hypochlorite will destroy pump seals and unloaders, so the chemical has to enter the line after the pump.
