Pressure Washing Business Startup Packages
Starting a pressure washing business is mostly a series of equipment decisions you only get to make once cheaply. We ran our own washing company for more than a decade before we started building rigs, so this is the list we would give a friend - what actually matters first, and what can wait.
The short version
| Priority | What you need | Why it matters first |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | A commercial machine, 4 to 8 GPM | Flow sets your production rate and therefore what you can bid |
| 2 | A way to apply chemical - downstream injector or a 12V soft wash system | House washing and roofs are where the money is, and neither is done with pressure |
| 3 | Surface cleaner sized to the machine | Turns a four-hour driveway into a one-hour driveway |
| 4 | Hose, reel and gun | Decides setup time and how long your hose survives |
| 5 | Chemicals and a surfactant | The actual cleaning agent on almost every residential job |
| 6 | Buffer tank if you are over about 5 GPM | Most house spigots will not feed a big machine |
| 7 | A rig to mount it on | Last, not first - but the thing that makes you look like a business |
Buy once: the machine
If you intend to grow, the machine we point people at is a gear drive Honda 8 GPM at 3,500 PSI with a Pulsar flow-sensitive unloader. It is more machine than a first-year business strictly needs, and it is also the one you will not have to replace in year two. If the budget is not there, 4 to 5.5 GPM will start a business - just size your surface cleaner to it. Read 4 GPM vs 5.5 GPM vs 8 GPM before you spend anything.
Skid, trailer or van?
A skid drops into a truck bed and comes out again, which keeps the truck useful. A trailer carries more water and gear and parks at the job. A van keeps everything locked and dry and looks the most professional. There is no universally right answer - there is a right answer for your work and your vehicle. We wrote the comparison here: skid vs trailer vs van.
What a startup package from us looks like
We do not sell a one-size box, because the right kit for a driveway-and-house-wash business in the suburbs is not the right kit for someone chasing commercial flatwork. What we do is spec it with you on a free discovery call, build it, and then train you on it before you leave with it. Every build includes:
- Training on your own rig, plus anytime phone troubleshooting afterwards
- Honda engines and upgraded pumps, block-mounted unloaders
- Marine-grade USA-made wiring and an upgraded charging system
- Lifetime frame warranty on aluminum skids
- Financing available so the rig can be paid for out of the work it does
Start here
Book a free discovery call and we will talk through the work you plan to bid, your vehicle and your budget before anyone quotes a number. Or request a build quote, see rigs that are ready now, or call the shop at 503-403-6185.
Not ready for a full rig? Start with the machine, a downstream injector, a surface cleaner and chemicals, and add the soft wash system when house washing starts paying for it.

Common questions
How much does it cost to start a pressure washing business?
The equipment side ranges enormously depending on whether you start with a machine in a truck bed or a complete custom rig. The honest advice is to buy the machine once and properly, then add the soft wash system, surface cleaner and rig as the work pays for them. Financing is available on builds so the rig can be paid for out of the jobs it does.
What equipment do I need to start pressure washing?
At minimum: a commercial pressure washer of 4 GPM or more, a way to apply chemical (a downstream injector or a 12V soft wash system), a surface cleaner sized to the machine, hose, a gun and nozzles, and chemicals with a surfactant. A buffer tank becomes necessary once you are above about 5 GPM.
Should I start with a skid, a trailer or a van?
A skid keeps your truck usable and is the most common starting point. A trailer carries more water and gear and parks at the job. A van is the most professional-looking and keeps gear dry and locked. The right answer depends on the work you bid and the vehicle you already own.
Do I need training to start?
You do not need a certificate, but you do need to know how to set up a downstream injector, mix chemical safely and avoid damaging a customer's property. Training is included free with every build we sell, and we run hands-on classes at the Oregon City shop.
Can I finance a startup rig?
Yes. We work with equipment finance and leasing partners, and most of our first-time buyers finance the build rather than paying cash so their working capital stays in the business. See our financing page for details.
