Choosing a hose reel for a pressure washing rig
A reel is not an accessory. It decides how fast you set up and break down, how long your hose lasts, and whether your rig looks like a business or a pile of gear in a truck bed. On a production crew, an electric reel pays for itself in minutes saved per job.
Manual or electric
| Manual | Electric | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Shorter runs, backup reels, garden hose and soft wash hose | Pressure hose on a daily production rig |
| Rewind | Crank - fine at 100ft, slow at 200ft and up | Motor rewind, one switch |
| Power | None | 12V - size the wiring and fuse for the motor |
| What to watch | Handle and lock quality | Swivel, motor and switch are the wear items |
What separates a good reel from a cheap one
Three things, and none of them are visible in a photo. The swivel, because that is what leaks. The internals, which should be stainless so chemical does not rust them out. And the frame - our Expert reels are full-frame aluminum rather than powder-coated steel, because powder coat chips, and the moment it chips on a soft wash rig it starts rusting. We do not run powder-coated steel reels on our own builds.
On a cheap reel the pipe running through the drum is steel. Ours is 316 stainless, as are the handles and the swivels - the industry standard is 304 and we upgraded everything to 316.
Sizing
Match the drum to the hose you actually carry. A 12 inch reel handles roughly 100 to 150 feet of 3/8 inch pressure hose; an 18 inch handles 200 feet and up, or heavier 1/2 inch two-wire. Overfilling a reel is how you end up with hose that will not lay flat and a swivel taking side load it was never meant to take. Add a whip line between the reel and the plumbing so the reel is not fighting a rigid connection, and a hose guide if the wrap is stacking to one side.
A note on shipping
Expert full-frame aluminum reels ship freight only. We stopped sending them by parcel because they arrived damaged too often - the frames take a beating in a parcel network. Smaller reels and replacement parts ship normally, free over $149.
Need a reel mounted into a rig rather than shipped loose? That is what we do - see our custom builds, where reel racks are welded into the frame.

Common questions
What size hose reel do I need?
Match the drum to the hose you carry. A 12 inch reel takes roughly 100 to 150 feet of 3/8 inch pressure hose. An 18 inch reel handles 200 feet and up, or heavier 1/2 inch two-wire hose. Overfilling a reel stops the hose laying flat and puts side load on the swivel.
Are electric hose reels worth it?
On a rig that works every day, yes. The time saved rewinding 200 feet of hose several times a day adds up quickly, and crews actually reel the hose in properly instead of coiling it on the ground, which is what shortens hose life.
Why do hose reels leak at the swivel?
Swivels are a wear item - the seals give out, especially if the reel is taking side load from a rigid plumbing connection or an overfilled drum. A whip line between the reel and the plumbing, and not overfilling the drum, both extend swivel life. Replacement swivels are stocked.
Can I use one reel for pressure hose and soft wash hose?
You can, but you should not. Sodium hypochlorite left in a pressure hose degrades it, and switching back and forth means chemical residue in a line you then use for rinsing. Separate reels for pressure and soft wash is the standard setup on our builds.
Why do aluminum reels ship freight?
Because parcel carriers damaged too many of them. Full-frame aluminum reels ship freight only so they arrive straight. Smaller reels and replacement parts ship normally, with free shipping over $149.
