Choosing hose for a pressure washing rig
There are four different hoses on a working rig and they are not interchangeable. Getting one wrong is how you end up with a burst line mid-job, a chemical-eaten jacket, or black scuff marks down a customer's white siding.
| Hose | Where it goes | What matters |
|---|---|---|
| Pressure hose | Pump or reel to the gun | Burst rating, wire count, hot water rating, non-marking jacket |
| Soft wash hose | 12V or gas soft wash pump to the gun | Chemical resistance - garden hose will not last |
| Garden hose / supply | Spigot to buffer tank or machine inlet | Flow, kink resistance, fittings that do not restrict |
| Plumbing hose | Inside the rig - tanks, manifolds, suction | Wall thickness, chemical compatibility, clamp fit |
One wire or two
One-wire 3/8 inch hose is the standard working line for most residential and light commercial pressure washing. Two-wire is heavier, has a higher burst rating, and is what you want for high-flow machines, hot water, and 1/2 inch runs feeding surface cleaners on large flatwork. Two-wire is stiffer and heavier to drag, so do not buy it if you do not need it.
We run FierceJet smooth-jacket gray non-marking hose on our own builds - 4,250 PSI working, 10,625 PSI burst, and still only one wire, so it stays easy to drag. It is hot water rated, and the smooth jacket slides over concrete instead of grabbing it. Non-marking matters more than people expect: a black jacket will leave scuffs on siding and pavers.
Plumbing hose inside the rig
This is where corners get cut on cheap builds. A lot of builders plumb with bulk poly braid or thin suction hose. We use Kuri Tec and Tigerflex throughout - thicker wall, better chemical compatibility, and it holds a clamp properly instead of collapsing. Buy it by the foot for a custom run, and pair it with fully stainless clamps rather than band-only clamps with a plated screw.
Length and pressure drop
Every extra 50 feet of hose costs you pressure at the gun, and the smaller the internal diameter, the more it costs. If you regularly work long runs from the truck, step up hose diameter before you step up the machine. Add a whip line at the reel and quick connects at both ends so you can swap sections instead of replacing a whole run.
Hose is cut to order and ships free over $149, same day from Oregon City.

Common questions
What is the difference between one-wire and two-wire pressure hose?
The number of steel braid layers. One-wire 3/8 inch handles most residential and light commercial work and is lighter to drag. Two-wire has a higher burst rating and holds up better on high-flow machines, hot water and 1/2 inch runs, at the cost of weight and stiffness.
Can I use garden hose for soft wash chemical?
No. Sodium hypochlorite breaks down standard garden hose from the inside, and you will get a failure with chemical in the line. Use hose rated for chemical on the soft wash side and keep it on its own reel.
Does hose length affect pressure?
Yes. Every additional length costs pressure at the gun, and smaller internal diameter costs more. If you routinely work 200 feet or more from the truck, increasing hose diameter recovers more pressure than buying a bigger machine.
Why does non-marking hose matter?
A black hose jacket dragged across siding, pavers or a painted deck leaves scuff marks you then have to clean off. Gray non-marking jacket avoids the callback. It also runs cooler in sun and drags more easily on concrete.
Can I buy hose by the foot?
Yes. Pressure hose, soft wash hose and plumbing hose are all available cut to length, so you can plumb a rig or replace one run without buying a full spool.
