Fittings and plumbing for pressure washing rigs
Fittings are the cheapest parts on a rig and the ones that decide whether it leaks. On our own builds the fitting and clamp spec is one of the things we will not compromise on, because a $2 part failing on a $30,000 trailer costs a day of work.
Material - pick by what runs through it
| Line | Use | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| High pressure | Stainless steel quick connects, plugs and couplers | Plated steel on anything that sees chemical |
| Chemical and soft wash | Polypropylene, PVC, stainless; Viton or FKM seals | Brass and standard rubber seals - bleach eats both |
| Water supply and buffer tank | Poly, brass where there is no chemical, camlocks for speed | Undersized fittings that choke flow into the pump |
| Tank penetrations | Bulkheads and Uniseal, rated for the liquid | Rubber-sealed bulkheads on chemical tanks |
Clamps - where most leaks start
Most hose clamps have a stainless band and a plated screw. On a soft wash rig that screw rusts, seizes and eventually fails, and you cannot re-tighten it. Every clamp on our builds is fully stainless including the screw, and suction hose gets a heavy-duty full-stainless clamp with a stainless bolt that we source from the UK. It costs more and leaks a great deal less.
Quick connects and sizing
3/8 inch quick connects are the standard on the pressure side for most machines; 1/2 inch appears on high-flow setups and larger surface cleaners. Keep spare O-rings on the truck - a leaking quick connect is nearly always a flattened or missing O-ring, not a failed coupler, and a 25-pack lives in a glovebox.
Building or repairing a rig
If you are plumbing a system from scratch, work out the flow first and size the fittings to it, not to whatever is in the parts drawer. A 3/4 inch suction run into an 8 GPM pump that necks down to 1/2 inch at one fitting will starve the pump. Pair fittings with Kuri Tec and Tigerflex plumbing hose rather than thin bulk poly braid, and use ball valves rated for what is passing through them.
We keep thousands of fittings on the shelf at the Oregon City storefront. Free shipping over $149, most orders out the same day.

Common questions
Why does my quick connect leak?
Nine times out of ten it is the O-ring, not the coupler. O-rings flatten, tear or go missing and the seal goes with them. Keep a pack on the truck - replacing one takes seconds and saves diagnosing a leak that is not there.
Can I use brass fittings on a soft wash system?
No. Sodium hypochlorite attacks brass. Use polypropylene, PVC or stainless on anything carrying chemical, and check that seals are Viton or FKM rather than standard rubber.
What size quick connects do I need?
3/8 inch is standard on the pressure side of most machines. High-flow machines and larger surface cleaners often run 1/2 inch. Match the fitting to the hose and the machine - necking down even one fitting in a run costs you flow.
Should hose clamps be fully stainless?
On a rig that carries chemical, yes. Most clamps pair a stainless band with a plated screw, and that screw rusts and seizes. We use fully stainless clamps including the screw on every build for exactly that reason.
What is the difference between a bulkhead and a Uniseal?
A bulkhead is a threaded two-piece fitting that clamps through a tank wall with a gasket. A Uniseal is a rubber grommet that a pipe pushes through. Bulkheads suit water and buffer tanks; be careful with rubber-sealed bulkheads on chemical tanks, where the seal is what gives out.
